River Styx seeks to publish work from new and established writers that is striking in its originality, energy, and craft. The high quality of work published in River Styx has made it a leader among literary magazines for over 40 years. River Styx has been included in many editions of the Best American Poetry, Best New Poets, New Stories from the South, and Pushcart Prize anthologies. General Submission Guidelines
Submit only previously unpublished work through Submittable. Simultaneous submissions are allowed but please inform us promptly if your piece is accepted elsewhere. You may withdraw entire submissions or leave a note about a partial withdrawal through the submission system.
Prose: Fiction and Nonfiction
All prose pieces should be between 1,000 and 5,000 words, double-spaced and paginated. Send no more than one short story or work of creative nonfiction per submission.
Send up to five poems per submissions. Translations are welcome if permission has been granted from owner of copyright.
River Styx prefers submissions through Submittable. Absolutely no email submissions will be considered. If you are unable to submit through our submission system, we will accept your postal submission (including a self-addressed stamped envelope for response) mailed to:
