Outside Literary Magazine is a partnership between the editors of River Styx and the English students and teachers at Central Visual and Performing Arts High School in the St. Louis Public School District. For this outreach project, Grants and Outreach Programs Director Lizzy Petersen worked closely with CVPA advisors and students to develop submission guidelines and a call for art, poetry, and prose submissions. She guided them as they read and chose work to include and paired literary pieces with art pieces. All work on the Outside Literary Magazine website was created and chosen by CVPA students. River Styx sees this partnership as a way to teach young writers the strong power of publishing, the entrepreneurial spirit of web design, and a lifelong love of the written word.
This literary magazine would not be possible without the wisdom and guidance of English Teachers Margaret Schuh and Rachel Bohn, Art Teachers William Perry and Clifford Williams, and Principal Dr. Kacy Seals.
River Styx will continue this partnership at CVPA High School in the 2017-18 school year, also incorporating collaborations with UrbArts, an artist alliance for social art, and Central Print, a non-profit printmaking studio.
Check out original art and poetry by CVPA high school students and donate to help them continue their hard work!
