Blog Editor
The Blog Editor manages the River Styx blog, The Styx. Primary responsibilities include building and managing blog contributors or staff writers, strategizing with the Managing Editor and other editors on content, creating and managing an editorial calendar, overseeing SEO implementation, site analytics, and visitor demographics, editing, approving, and publishing content, and abiding by ethical and legal compliance as well as copyrights and trademarks.
The ideal candidate will have experience in blog editing or writing, social media dexterity, and an understanding of market segmentation. An ability to choose and edit appropriate images and other graphic content is a major plus. Candidates with a talent for producing video content for TikTok and Instagram Reels to the front of the line!
Compensation: This is essentially a volunteer position with a very modest stipend.
Contributing Editor
A Contributing Editor provides the magazine with tactical support where needed. Responsibilities include various editorial duties, reading submissions, providing feedback during the editorial process, editing contributors’ work, and periodically reviewing and updating our in-house style guide.
Compensation: This is a volunteer position.
Copyeditor
The Copyeditor’s primary responsiblities include reading content (poetry, fiction, nonfiction, blog posts, social media posts) and reviewing it for punctuation, grammar, usage, style, and other mistakes, and to check for plagiarism, factual accuracy, copyright infringement, and other legal and ethical compliance concerns. The copyeditor will make track changes in Microsoft Word or Google Docs by agreed upon deadlines and provide proofreading support during the production process where needed.
The ideal candidate is proficient in English grammar, usage (preferably Garner’s Modern American Usage), and style (preferably Chicago Manual of Style and Associated Press Stylebook). Page layout experience is a plus.
Compensation: This is a volunteer position.
Editorial Intern (Reader)
An Editorial Intern (Reader) reads unsolicited work submitted to the magazine for publication. A candidate for this position need not have editorial experience but should have a love of literature, reading, and writing. A background in creative writing is not necessary, although we ask that you have the ability to articulate your thoughts and opinions about the strengths and weaknesses of a piece of writing. Empaty comes first; criticism second.
Candidates should expect to attend periodic staff meetings (virtual) and learn how to use Submittable.

Local Event Coordinator
We are seeking a volunteer event coordinator based in the St. Louis area to assist with scheduling, planning, staffing, and supporting the magazine's local in-person event programming. The ideal candidate is organized, task-oriented, and has some event planning experience. Specific duties include creating an 18-month event calendar in coordination with the Editorial Staff, booking talent and venues, ordering catering services, and working with the Managing Editor and Marketing Manager to ensure our social media and other marketing messaging are aligned.
River Styx hosts four in-person events per year, plus occasional smaller events as occasions arise. Must be willing to help the team out at the events.
Estimated at 5 hours per week. Candidate must reside in the St. Louis metro area.
Virtual Event Coordinator
We are seeking a volunteer event coordinator to assist in the scheduling, planning, and execution of the Magazine's virtual events.
The ideal candidate is organized, task-oriented, and possesses some event coordination experience, especially dealing with virtual events on Facebook Live and Instagram Live.
Specific duties include creating an 18-month event calendar in coordination with the Editorial Staff, booking talent, helping promote events through social media, attending events, and working with the Managing Editor and Marketing Manager to ensure our social media and other marketing messaging are aligned.
