River Styx: 50 Years of Poetry & Prose
50 years. One river. Countless voices.
A timeless collection of poetry and prose by some of the greatest writers of our time — from the archives of River Styx Magazine.
Founded in 1975 in St. Louis, Missouri, River Styx quickly established itself as a leading voice in American literature. To celebrate our 50th anniversary, we selected some of the best writing from more than 100 issues of the magazine. No single volume could possibly encompass such a colossal legacy, a half-century in the making. But we hope these pages will spark discovery, rediscovery, and a deeper dive into the living history of River Styx.
Featuring Margaret Atwood, Joy Harjo, Ha Jin, Julio Cortázar, Claudia Rankine, Adrienne Rich, Marilyn Chin, Rita Dove, Alicia Rebecca Myers, Sharon Doubiago, Howard Nemerov, Anna Castillo, Terry McMillan, Christopher Merrill, Gary Soto, Sharon Olds, Allen Ginsberg, Pamela Hadas, Pablo Neruda, André Breton, Peter Carlos, Anne Waldman, bell hooks, Lucille Clifton, Amiri Baraka, Jessica Hagedorn, David Clewell, Jane Wong, Joshua Braff, Wilma Elizabeth McDaniel, Katherine Min, Rajiv Mohabir, Pamela Painter, Philip Graham, Peter Orner, Kathleen Finneran, and William H. Gass.
